John Hancock Campaign Asks Voters To Remember Name Already Doing Most Of The Work

Candidate’s historic branding advantage remains under review by voters, printers, and people who barely passed social studies

CINCINNATI— With the OH-01 Libertarian primary approaching May 5, John Hancock entered the final stretch of the race with what political observers described as “the single dumbest unfair advantage legally available on a ballot”: being named John Hancock. Hancock is listed in the Libertarian primary, while Jason Stoops is listed as a write-in candidate.

Local election watchers said Hancock’s campaign appears to rely heavily on voters reaching the Libertarian ballot, seeing the name, pausing, and thinking, “Well, I have heard of him.” According to sources close to the situation, that moment alone may represent the most effective third-party messaging operation in Hamilton County.

“It is difficult to compete with a man whose name comes pre-installed in the American civic operating system,” said one West Side political observer, speaking from the neutral election analysis section of a Delhi Kroger. “A normal candidate has to build recognition. John Hancock just shows up and every voter’s brain starts playing colonial flute music.”

Hancock’s campaign bio identifies him as a Cincinnati native, Libertarian, county officer, national delegate, and engineering technician, which experts say gives him the unique political profile of “guy at the meeting who both read the bylaws and knows where the Allen wrench is.”

Still, critics say the campaign faces the traditional Libertarian obstacle of needing voters to care about a primary election that feels like it was scheduled inside a tax form. Campaign analysts noted Hancock’s strongest opponent may not be Stoops, but the average voter’s unwillingness to attend to anything involving the words “Libertarian primary” before lunch.

As of press time, Hancock’s name continued polling extremely well among people who thought they were signing something.
